Desai’s Statement on Temporary Protected Status
Helena, AR (January 8, 2018) — Today, the Department of Homeland Security announced the Trump administration would end protections for El Salvadoran immigrants, forcing more than 200,000 out of the United States.
These immigrants were previously allowed entry into the US under Temporary Protected Status after devastating hurricanes struck El Salvador in 2001. They are now expected to pick up and move their lives back to a destitute homeland within the next 18 months.
This action by the Trump administration is yet another attack on hard-working men and women who once sought refuge and peace within our borders. Our country was built on the backs of immigrants, yet our current president and his lackeys make continued efforts to write them out of our history.
Chintan Desai, Democratic candidate for Arkansas’s First Congressional District, is deeply invested in protecting the rights of immigrants and believes all citizens deserve ample opportunities, no matter where they are from or the color of their skin.
